A Message from Cheryl Wright, SA Cancer Council President
It was 35 years ago that a local group of pioneering women joined forces to establish a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC). They had one goal in mind: make a difference in the fight against cancer. Our founding members include Edith McCallister, Lois Yancy and first president Jane Cole. Since 1984 members of the SA Cancer Council have worked to raise awareness of and funds for the Mays Cancer Center newly named centerat UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center. In celebrating our historic legacy, we wish to salute our organization’s past presidents who built a culture of philanthropy that exists to this day.
Today, our all-volunteer organization continues to work tirelessly to host multiple fundraising events that benefit our Cancer Center. Funds raised from our membership drive, Spring Luncheon and Cure Cancer Card (formerly the Partners Shopping Card) have allowed us to donate more than $5 million to support cutting edge research and patient assistance. For the past five years our volunteers have worked in tandem with the Food Bank to stock a food pantry with nutritional options for patients. Four years ago, the Council launched our Circles of Hope, which are comprised of members, and non-members, with each Circle raising $25,000 annually to directly support ground level research projects.
For over 35 years your support has enabled us to support the following areas:
- $1,000,000 donation to name the CTRC Council Radiation Therapy suite
- $750,000 to establish the CTRC Council Patient Education Suite
- $1,000,000 to establish the CTRC Distinguished Chair in Oncology
- $600,000 to support the Patient Supportive Care Fund at the Mays Cancer Center
- $275,000 to support cancer research grants at our Cancer Center
- $150,000 to support pilot research projects at our Cancer Center
- $63,000 to purchase two vans for the cancer center for patients to receive life-saving treatments
Council Support & Member Engagement
We are proud of our role in supporting the San Antonio Express News Book & Author Luncheon whose proceeds fund the Phase I Clinical Research Program, the free Skin Cancer Screening in July, and the Breast Cancer Symposium. This year, we plan to participate in the Give Cancer the Boot Survivorship 5K Run/Walk at the Mays Cancer Center. The SA Cancer Council also hosts a variety of membership engagement events throughout the year such as our Lunch & Learns, Healthy Cooking Demos, tours of the Cancer Center, and a membership coffee.
How Can You Get Involved?
Our rich tradition continues. We invite you to advance the mission of the SA Cancer Council to prevent cancer, find a cure for cancer and to care for those battling the disease today. Consider becoming a member of the Council, or volunteer your time, or new this year, opt to partner with the Council in the form of sponsorship. This year we have introduced an annual sponsorship model, to allow our generous contributors to be able to plan to write one check to support all of the Council’s activities on an annual basis. Sponsorship affords our underwriters multiple benefits as our means of saying thank you for championing the cause of the SA Cancer Council. You can visit our web site at https://sacancercouncil.org/ or phone 210.450.8574 for more information. Together we can continue to make a difference!
