SAN ANTONIO CANCER COUNCIL
Circles of Hope: A Unique Giving Opportunity
This initiative has become one of our most successful fundraising projects. Launched in 2015, Circles of Hope provide a way for you, your friends, families, and others to become personally involved in supporting leading-edge research to PREVENT and CURE cancer through one of Texas’ premier cancer research institutions, the Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center.
What is it? A Circle of Hope is a group of 10 individuals (or couples) who join together to directly fund “pilot research projects,” the vital first steps in advancing breakthroughs in innovative cancer research.
How does it work? Each Circle contributes $2,500 per individual/couple each year for two years. The Circle then has $25,000 to fund a pilot research project of their choosing from a list of peer-reviewed and vetted projects provided by Dr. Ruben Mesa, the Director of the Mays Cancer Center. Also, thanks to Dr. Mesa, each Circle’s contribution will be matched by the Cancer Center, doubling the significant impact of the Circle’s donation to a total of $50,000. This is an amazing opportunity!
Then what? Each Circle can expect to receive a personal update from their researcher on the progress being made on the project they funded, usually within 6-9 months. At the end of the year, Circle members will receive a written report with the project outcomes. The cycle then starts over with the vote for the second year’s project. This may be a continuation of the current project or the selection of a new pilot project.
