SA Cancer Council members volunteer for Annual Skin Cancer Screening
The Annual Skin Cancer Screening was held on August 29, 2019 at the Mays Cancer Center.
A team of physicians and staff, as well as 20 volunteers from the SA Cancer Council, assisted in the screening of 136 people from 5:30-8:30 pm. The screening identified the following:
- 19 people (13.9%) with suspected Actinic keratosis (Pre-cancerous lesions)
- 8 (5.9%) with suspected Basal cell carcinoma
- 7 (5.4%) with atypical moles.
- 22 (16.1%) had a lesion suspicious for skin cancer (Squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma or atypical mole/ melanoma) and were referred for a skin biopsy
At least 19 people were referred for treatment of their actinic keratosis or other skin disorders.
