Honoring the Past: Celebrating 35 Years of Giving

A Message from Cheryl Wright, President, SA Cancer Council

sa cancer councilIt was 35 years ago that a local group of pioneering women joined forces to establish a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC). They had one goal in mind: make a difference in the fight against cancer. Our founding members include Edith McCallister, Lois Yancy and first president Jane Cole. Since 1984, members of the SA Cancer Council have worked to raise awareness of and funds for the Mays Cancer Center, the newly named center at UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center. In celebrating our historic legacy, we wish to salute our organization’s past presidents (see list below) who built a culture of philanthropy that exists to this day. Today, our all-volunteer organization continues to work tirelessly to host multiple fundraising events that benefit our Cancer Center. Funds raised from our membership drive, Spring Luncheon and Cure Cancer Card (formerly the Partners Shopping Card) have allowed us to donate more than $5 million to support cutting edge research and patient assistance. Your Contributions Matter: One Patient’s Story

In the GI clinic, we have a patient under treatment who is the caregiver to his spouse who suffers from dementia. They have a fixed income through social security. Recently, within the last year before our patient became ill, he was made the legal guardian to his three young grandchildren. Family circumstances warranted that our patient becomes the guardian. As you can imagine, our patient has been under a lot of stress. During the holidays it was especially evident how the burden was impacting him. When I spoke with him, he shared how sad he was over not being able to give his grandchildren gifts or a special holiday meal. The gift cards allowed me to relieve him of some of the burdens he was experiencing. If you could have seen his face and smile when I presented him with the cards…it warms the heart.
Please thank everyone. And yes, we would definitely like to have gift cards for use during the entire year.
